PRIVATE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Since the last academic year, in response to the requests of many students, we have introduced the option to request permission to use electrical appliances in dorm rooms/units, which were previously completely prohibited according to the dormitory rules—even though compliance with this ban was not strictly monitored. The growing trend of using private electrical appliances is leading to an increasing load on the dormitory’s electrical network, which was not designed for current consumption levels. This results in overloads and outages. Overloading the network with multiple appliances can pose a safety risk. On the other hand, the dormitory management understands that access to appliances like a kettle or microwave is a necessity for some students today.

Therefore, the dormitories have introduced the option to have such appliances in rooms/units—but in limited quantities and without fees to avoid overloading. The use of electrical appliances in rooms/units is conditional upon an approved request. We kindly ask residents to share electrical appliances as much as possible and to use them efficiently.

In accordance with the Dormitory Regulations of CU Mlyny, Article 6, Sections 17 and 18:

The Accommodated Person may not use any private electrical appliances in the room/accommodation unit and in the SH premises, with the exception of the following:

  • computer,
  • laptop,
  • wifi router unless wifi is provided by the Accommodation Provider,
  • hairdryer / hair straightener,
  • radio,
  • table lamp.

If residents wish to use a private electrical appliance in a shared room/unit that is not listed above, they can mutually agree and request permission for a maximum of two additional appliances at the Accommodation office. The application form must be printed in 2 copies, filled out, and submitted to the Accommodation office. The form will be approved by the Accommodation office staff. The approved application must be placed in a visible spot in the room/unit next to the inventory list.

Application Process for Electrical Appliances

WHICH APPLIANCES CAN I APPLY FOR?

Guests can primarily request appliances like a kettle, microwave, coffee maker, or toaster. Other appliances will be evaluated by the Accommodation office. Common electronics (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, computers, watches, headphones, chargers, desk lamps) and personal hygiene devices (e.g., hairdryers, curling irons, sonic toothbrushes) are not regulated and do not require to apply.

HOW MANY PRIVATE APPLIANCES CAN I REQUEST?

Guests of one unit/room can apply via one applicant request permission for max. two additional appliances per unit/room, based on the block they are accommodated in:

  • Manželáky: 2 appliances per unit
  • Átriáky: 2 appliances per room

HOW DO I SUBMIT AN APPLICATION?

You can submit your application using the FORM. Print the form in 2 copies, fill it out with signatures from all roommates in the unit/room, and submit it to the Accommodation office of CU Mlyny. The application will be reviewed and either approved or rejected by the Accommodation office staff.

WHEN CAN I SUBMIT MY APPLICATION?

An application can be submitted only after it has been signed by all roommates in the unit/room. Without this condition being met, the application will not be accepted. Please note that beverage vending machines and the Eat & Meet cafeteria are always available to residents at CU Mlyny.

WHERE SHOULD I PLACE THE APPROVED APPLICATION?

The applicant is required to display the approved application in a visible spot in the room/unit next to the inventory list. The requested appliances are considered approved only after the application has been authorized by the CU Mlyny accommodation office staff.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES FOR MEDICAL REASONS

If a student needs a private electrical appliance for medical reasons (e.g., a rice cooker for a special diet, an air purifier for asthma, a special refrigerator for insulin), they can request permission for an appliance beyond the standard ones. A medical certificate must be provided, which can be a brief statement from the attending physician recommending the use of the appliance for health reasons. An email confirmation is sufficient.

WHEN DOES THE APPLICATION EXPIRE?

If the applicant checks out or relocates, they must return the application to the inspecting staff. The application becomes invalid on the day of relocation or check-out.

INSPECTIONS AND PENALTIES

In accordance with Article 7, Section 3 of the Dormitory Regulations, the Accommodation provider is authorized to conduct inspections for compliance with safety and fire regulations and proper use of the accommodation space, either in the presence or absence of the residents. The presence of unauthorized appliances in the assigned room/unit will be penalized in accordance with Article 11 of the Dormitory Regulations, with a fine of €100/appliance. Plugging an appliance into the power strip above the desks in the room will result in a fine of €50 in accordance with Article 11.

What if I have an appliance in the room that I’m not using, just storing?

The ban applies to appliances regardless of the frequency of use. If a specific situation arises (e.g., you need to store a wrapped gift for a few days) and you want to avoid a potential fine, please inform us at the email address mlyny.ubytovanieuniba.sk.

Will printers, televisions, irons, fans, heaters, gaming consoles, or other appliances not listed in the form be approved?

If an appliance is not clearly listed on the application form, submit an application, and the accommodation office will evaluate it. We recommend bringing the appliance only after receiving a positive response to the request.
