What to do if you were not allocated dormitory accommodation?

19. 08. 2026 19.10 hod.

The regular phase of the accommodation process has ended and most available beds at Comenius University dormitories have already been allocated. For students who were not allocated accommodation, as well as mobility students arriving in Bratislava for whom dormitory accommodation is currently unavailable, we have prepared several tips that may help when looking for accommodation in Bratislava.

1. Submit an additional accommodation application

CU students who were not allocated a bed during the regular accommodation process are advised to submit an additional accommodation application.

The application form is available from 19 August 2026. Additional applications will be processed approximately from the end of August and throughout September, depending on the availability of beds.

Submitting an additional application does not automatically guarantee accommodation. It is therefore advisable not to rely on this option alone and to explore other accommodation possibilities at the same time, particularly if accommodation is needed as soon as possible.

Students from universities other than CU may also submit an additional application. However, CU students will be given priority in the allocation process, which means that accommodation for non-CU students may only become available later during the winter semester.

Students coming to CU as part of a mobility programme do not submit an additional application. In such cases, please follow the information available on this website.

All information about additional applications is available on the websites of CU Mlyny and CU Družba.

2. Where to start looking?

Accommodation offers in Bratislava can be found through a number of different channels. It is best to combine several ways of searching rather than relying on a single source.

Useful places to check include:

  • websites offering rental properties and shared accommodation,
  • social media groups focused on flats, rooms and shared accommodation in Bratislava,
  • student and faculty groups,
  • listings for individual rooms in shared flats,
  • short-term accommodation options for the first few days or weeks of the semester.

For those looking for a more affordable option, renting an entire flat is not the only possibility. Renting a single room in a shared flat or finding flatmates and looking for a flat together may be more affordable.

3. Do not look only at the advertised price

When comparing offers, always check what exactly is included in the stated price.

Before making a decision, it is worth checking in particular:

  • Is the price per person, per room or for the entire flat?
  • Are utilities included? Is internet included? Are there any other fees associated with the rental?
  • Is a deposit required and, if so, how much?
  • For what period is the contract concluded? If additional dormitory accommodation is allocated later, when and under what conditions can the contract be terminated?
  • Is the room or flat furnished?
  • How many people will live in the flat and which areas will be shared?

An offer with a lower monthly rent may not ultimately be the cheapest option if additional regular charges are added.

4. If Bratislava is unfamiliar, check the location before booking

When looking for accommodation in an unfamiliar city, it is better not to focus only on the name of the district, the distance from the city centre or the number of kilometres.

First, check where the relevant faculty is located and where most classes will take place. Comenius University facilities are located across several parts of Bratislava, and some study programmes may require travel between several university buildings.

For each accommodation offer, it is therefore useful to check the exact address and, in particular:

  • how long the journey to the faculty will take,
  • where the nearest public transport stop is,
  • whether transfers will be necessary,
  • what public transport connections are available early in the morning and in the evening,
  • the availability of grocery stores and basic services,
  • connections to the railway or bus station, particularly for those planning to travel home regularly.

Accommodation farther from the city centre can sometimes be more practical than a flat that appears closer on the map but requires a more complicated journey or several transfers. For long-term accommodation, good public transport connections may therefore be more important than the distance in kilometres.

Connections can be checked using the IDS BK journey planner or public transport timetables.

5. Be cautious with offers from private individuals

Demand for rental accommodation is particularly high at the beginning of the academic year. Pressure to make a quick decision, however, is not a reason to send money without knowing exactly what the payment is for.

Before paying a deposit or the first month’s rent, check the basic information about the offer, the rental conditions and the person offering the accommodation. Whenever possible, view the flat or room in person before making a payment.

For students arriving from abroad who are unable to attend an in-person viewing, it is advisable to request at least a video call or a current video tour of the accommodation and to have all conditions confirmed in writing.

Particular caution is recommended with offers that are significantly cheaper than comparable accommodation or require an immediate payment without providing a reasonable opportunity to verify the accommodation first.

6. No long-term accommodation yet? Consider a temporary solution

If suitable long-term accommodation cannot be found before arriving in Bratislava, it may be more practical to arrange short-term accommodation for the first few days or weeks and continue looking for a long-term rental after arrival. While demand is very high in August, the situation often becomes calmer later in the autumn and more favourable accommodation offers may become available. At the same time, vacancies may gradually become available at CU dormitories as well.

This also makes it possible to view accommodation offers in person, become more familiar with Bratislava and better assess which location is most convenient in terms of the university and daily travel.

The search for long-term accommodation can also continue while waiting for the result of an additional application for CU dormitory accommodation.
